Ethics Put to Test
The first job I ever had was at a local Produce and Ice Cream store ran by my best friends grand mother. As a favor to me and her grandson she hired me even though I had no experience. Since it is a local store a lot of kids from the local high school work there. Many friends of the workers know that they work there and know how old fashion the store is. There are no cameras and ice cream can not keep inventory on. So a lot of the workers normally hook up their friends with free ice cream, pretzels, hot dogs, drinks, etc. Once my friends found out they were at the store constantly looking for free hand outs. My friends put me in a bad situation always asking for free stuff. This situation put my ethics to the test. Since it was my best friends grand mother along with the fact that I have known her since I was six the simple answer was to say no to my friends even if it meant upset friends. Even if I was not personally connected to the owner I would of said no because I believe in loyalty and honesty.

Loyalty and honesty are honorable and your friends should have never forced you into a situation to steal.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a tough spot to be in when your friends come to you asking you to do them a favor, but especially since your best friends grandmother went out of her way to hire you it was admirable of you to return the favor.
ReplyDeleteyou are a good dude
ReplyDeleteNice, it's good to know there are more people with some integrity out there!
ReplyDeleteI've worked in a restaurant before and never gave away free stuff to people I know. It's not fair to the business owner. I'm glad you realized this and made the right decision.
ReplyDeleteI had a similiar situation, but it was me who the person wanted to give me free stuff. I stopped taking the freebies because it wasn't honest.
ReplyDeleteYou did the right thing by not giving them something for free. Especially since you would be giving away something that wasn't even yours. The since of entitlement that many people have today is absurd. Even if it was your business and not your friend's grandmother, your friends still would not have the right to ask you for anything free. It would be different if you offered it to them, however to expect it is ignorant.
ReplyDeleteDont beat your self down over it my friend. I predict you are going to go far in life with your attitude. If only more people shared your qualities the world would be a much better placee
ReplyDeleteThe situation you were put into is what many go through, sometimes on an even larger stage of "hand outs"
ReplyDeleteYou made a good decision. Your true friends will still be there even if they dont get the free food
